Walkerville grew around the distillery and keeps many large early-1900s houses; Sandwich, by the river, is older still. Around them, the east side and the streets near the old plants were built for auto workers from the 1920s to the 1950s: brick houses and bungalows, many with one small bathroom on a wood floor that has moved.

A renovation in those houses starts with a tear-out and a check of the subfloor, then metal lath with a scratch coat or a mortar bed, so new tile does not crack.
