Kingston was the first capital of the Province of Canada, and much of its old core is built of local limestone. Sydenham Ward, the streets around the market and Portsmouth Village have stone and brick houses from the 1800s, many with thick walls, settled floors and bathrooms squeezed in long after they were built.
