Interior demolition, back to the slab

Every new shower floor starts with the old one coming out. Across Toronto and the GTA, we take rooms back to the slab or the studs, behind plastic, with the debris bagged and the floor left clear for the new bed.

Questions

Questions about interior demolition

Do you take the debris away?

Yes. On small jobs the debris is bagged and carried out as we go. For a basement or a commercial floor we arrange a bin and fill it as we go.

How do you keep the dust down?

In a lived-in home, plastic walls go up around the work area and the stairs and railings get covered before we start. You can see it in the hallway photos.

What about asbestos?

Homes built before 1990 can have asbestos in vinyl tile, mastic, plaster, joint compound and pipe insulation. In Ontario it must be checked before demolition starts. We ask for a lab test of anything suspect, and on commercial jobs the designated substance survey. Anything that tests positive is removed by an asbestos abatement contractor before we start.

Who disconnects the plumbing and power?

Your plumber and electrician cap the lines before we start. We work around the capped lines and leave valves and boxes exposed for them to find.

Can you lay the new floor after?

Yes. Once the slab is clean, the dry pack or screed can go down straight after.
